Airline Boarding Pass SPAM

Sojern, Inc. is a company offering a new service more SPAM to airline passengers on the major carriers in the U.S., including American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways. The company will provide destination content to passengers when they check-in for flights online.

What’s this? When you go to check in for your flight online, Sojern is going to SPAM you with advertisements from businesses in your destination. It’s an ad on your boarding pass, like those now commonly found in bathroom stalls.

Delta Air Lines passengers traveling to Las Vegas should already have the pleasure. Soon, all Delta passengers will be in on the fun.

“With millions of our passengers checking in online at delta.com each year, the boarding pass [ie untapped marketing resource] becomes an increasingly valuable tool for sharing relevant, timely offers and destination-specific content with our customers before they travel,” said Marc Ferguson, general manager of Global Partnerships for Delta. “At Delta, we are always looking for innovative, new opportunities to provide added benefits to our customers, and this customized data from Sojern does exactly that.”

The other airlines will begin service for domestic passengers later this year.

This information will be offered in cooperation with each airline’s website. The airlines websites will remain independent, if you didn’t already guess. Content will be provided both during the check-in process and be printed directly on the boarding passes.

Honestly, during the fuel crisis I’m glad the airlines are finding a new source of revenue. I hope the new advertising scheme will help contain the rising costs of airline tickets. It doesn’t sound all bad, just a little extra reading material while you’re sitting in the airport.

The custom tailored content will help passengers plan for the unpredictable and the delectable by providing weather forecasts for the duration of their trip and by helping them locate cuisine choices that fit their budget and lifestyle. In addition, Sojern will provide timely content about events that are happening in destination cities across the nation and customized offers to passengers by working with a wide variety of advertisers who aspire to reach the quality demographics represented by airline passengers.

The press release hints that there may be some frequent flyer deals in the works, with local businesses offering miles for patronage. You can never earn too many miles.
