Arkansas Travelers Dickey-Stephens Park (Part II)
You expect many things when you go to a minor league baseball game, like the bathroom stall to be broken in the Ladies restroom, and the new Dickey-Stephens Park didn’t disappoint. We arrived at the game just in time to see the fighter jet fly over the field. Of-course we were still on the outside of the stadium, but it was still cool (and loud). Actually, we arrived around 5:10 and then spent a little too long having pre-game cocktails at Cornerstone.
When you walk in the stadium, you are rewarded with a gorgeous view of downtown Little Rock. All of the ballpark necessities are close to the entry, including food, drinks and big foam fingers. According to the announcer, the entire park is hooked up with free Wi-Fi. I’m not sure who is geeky enough to take a laptop to a baseball game, but business travelers should keep that in mind in-case the need comes up. We spent the large part of the game sitting standing in right field. The lines for the beer tent and the bathroom were short and the Miller Light was cold. And so was I after about the 4th inning.
We saw a lot of things at the game. The banana race and cammo jackets, bitch slaps and spilled beer (actually, the bitch slap came after the spilled beer), Shelly and a Wildman look-alike, a dinger to right field and a fun fireworks display to the Arkansas anthem “God Bless the USA.” We sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” off-key and cheered on the Travs from around the stadium.
I am really grateful I was able to come home for this historic opening. Dickey-Stephens is an amazing park, despite the issues in the Ladies room. Definitely give it a shot when you visit Little Rock.
