Dog Power 2007 in Reno, Nevada

The Dog Power 2007 1st Western Regional Dog Power Sports Conferece is being held on June 15 to 17 at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada. If you happen to be in Reno during that time, there will be a special Saturday screening of the Palm Pictures feature documentary “Sun Dogs” chronicling the creation of the Jamaica Dogsled Team. The screening will take place on Saturday, June 16, 2007.

Movie goers will be asked to make a $5.00 donation to purchase equipment for the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, and will be automatically entered to win tickets to the October, Jimmy Buffett Bama Breeze Tour concert in Las Vegas as well as dinner for two at Margaritaville, courtesy of Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville, sponsor of the Jamaica Dogsled Team. Wow, a dog sled team sponsored by the man Jimmy Buffett.

Dog Power 2007 conference activities on Saturday, June 16, 2007, are open to the public and will have an appeal not just for professional and recreational snow and dryland mushers, but for all service organizations; educators interested in teaching the Iditarod Program in schools; and those interested in all aspects of canine sport, training, fitness and health. Anyone interested in supporting search and rescue canines, or thinking about getting a dog, will have access to experts and information at Dog Power 2007. Twenty-five percent of the net proceeds of Dog Power 2007 will benefit the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and will support their work rescuing dogs from shelters, and training them as working search and rescue canines for nationwide teams, to serve when needed at disaster areas worldwide. It costs as much as $14,000 per dog for this training.

Guest speakers for the event include John Stetson, arctic explorer and Global Warming 101 Expedition manager, Maryna Ozuna the founder of the Kinaesthetics system of body care for humans, horses, and dogs and Sally Blair former Secretary General of the International Federation of Sleddog Sports (IFSS) who contributed to the development of P.A.W.S. (Promoting Abilities with Sleddogs) to advance the partnership between sled dog sports and Special Olympics Minnesota.

Registration for the public for events on Saturday, June 16th starts at 7:30 a.m., the program of events begins at 8:30 a.m. The
registration fee for the general public is $35.00, for educators $25.00, and students (over 18 with identification) and children $10.00. There will also be a Keynote Speaker Luncheon with Lance Mackey, this year’s winner of both the Iditarod and Yukon Quest Sled Dog Races; this is not included in general admission, tickets are $27.00.
