Goog-411 Trial – Google Voice Local Search
Google has decided to expand its cellular service from just offering information via SMS text message to providing voice information services with the new Google Voice Local Search. , which goes by the nickname Goog-411. The service, which is currently in the testing phase, makes local business searches accessible via the phone.
How does it work? Pretty much like your everyday 411 call. You call the toll-free number, (800) GOOG-411, and speak your search query. The query is then processed through speech recognition software. If there is an exact match, Google will connect the user directly to the business free of charge. You know I like free stuff. Otherwise, results from the search are read back to the user. The user has the option to request the information be sent via text message to a cell phone. Handy if you don’t have anything to write with. Initial reviews of the service have been mostly positive. Google claims the data used is the same as would be found using Google Maps. For now, the test offering is only available in English in the United States.
