Newby’s Memphis (Bar & Music Venue)
There is more to Memphis than downtown and Beale Street. Granted, most of it is pretty scary, but there are some great options in the city as well. You may not know this if you’ve only visited the home of the blues for a tour of Graceland or business. If you don’t want to act like a tourist, head to midtown. You’ll find loads of great restaurants and bars around the University of Memphis, including my (second) favorite bar in town – Newby’s.
Newby’s is one of those great local venues with something fun going on every night. After my trip there last week, I decided I’m not really responsible enough to frequent a bar that features free Blue Moon beer for ladies (on Thursday) but you just can’t beat that kind of deal. Tone Loc will be there on the 24th of this month. I didn’t know he was still around, but how could you miss hearing Funky Cold Medina live if you happen to be in the area?
And when you’re leaving Newby’s, you can head over to Juicy Jim’s (right across the street) for the scrumptious Philly Cheese Steak. It beats the heck out of a peanut and banana sandwich.
My favorite Memphis bar, by the way, is Silky O’Sullivan’s on Beale Street. Try the 1 gallon drink (yes, I said ONE GALLON) called the Diver. Also, check out the goats while you’re there.
