Proximity: Screensaver Auto Lock with Bluetooth for Mac
I recently read an article on Lifehacker that made me want a Mac (even more than the built in camera or the ads with the cute boy from Dodgeball). If you have one, you can download Jesse David Hollington’s device that locks and unlocks your computer’s screensaver based on the proximity of your cell phone. The (bluetooth enabled) computer detects your phone’s bluetooth and unlocks the screensaver when you are within range. When you are out of range, the computer locks. What great news for business travelers (those who have Macs, anyway). Imagine you’re in a meeting in a client’s office and you have to leave the room for some reason. The client would have no access to your files once you are out of range. Same thing at trade shows, where people often set up laptops for presentations. Very handy.
Proximity is the application that makes it happen. The scripts automatically enable the passworded screensaver when you leave your computer, and turns it off and syncs his address book when you’re nearby. Proximity is a free download, but as I mentioned it is only for Mac.
