U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria
Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja is located almost squarely in the center of the country. The former Nigerian capital of Lagos, located on the country’s coast, is absolutely enormous (second only to Cairo in all of Africa). Lagos served as the capital until 1991, when the planned city of Abuja became the new capital.
Abuja is a planned city, built almost entirely in the 1980s and designed from the start to become the Nigerian capital. In fact, Abuja is at the center of a region called the “Federal Capital Territory,” so there’s really no mistaking that it’s the capital city now.
If you’re in need of consular services when you’re in Nigeria, however, you can go to Abuja or Lagos. While the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria is now located in Abuja, there is still a consulate in Lagos.
